Sweet tooth? Visit the Philippines' Chocolate Hills
We are all connected by our love of music and have the unique opportunity to learn from one another's cultures, interests and ways of life. Each month PRELUDE will highlight a music enthusiast from around the world. Meet Hyacinth Famarin
Country: Philippines Choir: Miriam College High School Glee Club
Occupation: Student Hyacinth, tell us about the Philippines. The Philippines is an archipelago, made up of 7,107 islands (7,106 on a low tide). It is very rich in natural resources, and we take pride in this. One of our most prized natural wonders is the Banaue Rice Terraces, which was actually made by hand by our ancestors.
Tell us about diversity in your country. There are a lot of ethnic groups in the Philippines therefore, giving birth to many languages and dialects. The main religions in the Philippines are Roman Catholic, Muslim, and Iglesia ni Cristo.
What is your favorite traditional food? My favorite traditional food is sinigang. It's sour and usually made with pork (but seafood sinigang is good, too) and vegetables. We eat this with rice.
If someone were to visit, where would you take them? I would take them to Bohol, where they can see the Chocolate Hills. The hills are so brown, it really looks like chocolate.
What is the most beautiful part of living in your country? The people are very hospitable. I always get excited visiting different parts of my country because everyone always greets you with warmth and kindness. You feel welcome no matter where in the Philippines you are.
What type of music do you like? I like Broadway, Pop and R&B.
What are you currently learning in school? Most schools in the Philippines are sectarian. Instead of thinking what you can do for yourself, we are taught to be a responsible citizen of the world and find ways to solve the world's problems in our own little ways.
What is the weather like in Philippines? We have two types of weather - wet and dry. During the summer, it is really hot. During the wet season, it rains so hard and it really is quite cold. We don't experience snow though due to our position near the equator.
Tell me more about your Glee Club. The Miriam College High School Glee Club is composed of 41 girls who share the passion to spread Glee to the world through singing. We are one of the official performing groups of our school, and we hold annual concerts (usually during February). We recently held a fundraising event for future activities, such as World Choir Games in Cincinnati, USA!
