First choir to register for 2012 Games
Southern Gateway Chorus, a Cincinnati USA barbershop choir comprised of more than 100 male a cappella harmony singers, was the first choir to register for the 2012 World Choir Games.
The world-renowned choir has been spreading its love of music through live performances and recordings since 1956. Southern Gateway has won 22 medals in 29 competitive appearances over the years.

"Southern Gateway changes lives by making wonderful music, and I can't wait to share my love of music with not only Cincinnati but the world in 2012," said Brian Zink, choir member since 1988.
Choir members range in age from 14 years to late 80s. The youngest member and Brian Zink's son, Jon, will also be participating in the 2012 Games. Jon is a third generation Southern Gateway member. "My grandfather passed along his love of music to me, and I have done the same with my son," said Brian.
"Ever since I can remember I've been singing with my dad. We have so much fun together. The entire chorus is an extended family to me. We learn from and respect one another," said Jon.
Jon, a Lakota West High School freshman, performed the school's leading role in School House Rock Live this January. "Performing is such a thrill. I can't wait to perform with Southern Gateway and spread my love of harmony. Winning a gold medal would also be awesome," said Jon.

Colombia: The only risk is wanting to stay
We are all connected by our love of music and have the unique opportunity to learn from one another's cultures, interests and ways of life. Each month PRELUDE will highlight a music enthusiast from around the world.
Meet Clara Garcías Country: Colombia
Choir: Coral Comfenalco Santander
Clara, tell us about Colombia.
Colombia is in northwestern South America and is recognized worldwide for the production of coffee, flowers, emeralds, coal and oil.
Tell us about diversity in your country.
In Colombia there is diversity in everything, from customs, races, climate, accents to religions and ways of thinking. Across the country we get a wide variety of fruits and vegetables of excellent quality at any time of year.
What is your favorite traditional food?
My favorite is the "melting pot Bogota." It's a soup made of three different kinds of potatoes and chicken essence and is accompanied with capers, cream and avocado. It's delicious. The soup can be found throughout my county, but primarily in Bogota, the capital of Colombia.
What struggles, if any, does your country face?
Unfortunately my country does face struggles (as all countries do) that include drug trafficking, terrorism and kidnapping. These are real struggles that should not go unnoticed, however, there is so much good that far outweighs the bad. My country is making positive strides. There is a saying in Colombia: The only risk is wanting to stay.
Tell us about what makes Colombia so special. People in my country live life to the maximum and are very friendly, hospitable and generous.
We love to celebrate Christmas and birthdays. It is common to see Colombians outside tubing on the rivers, exploring caves, napping on the beach or paragliding in the water. There is something for everyone.
Describe a typical weekend with your friends and family.
Saturday afternoons my family (husband and two daughters) and I eat ice cream to celebrate the weekend. Sometimes at night if it is a friend's birthday we will celebrate by eating cake and going out to a salsa dance bar. We dance the night away at "Bar Cepita."
Sundays involve going to church and eating lunch at "Mercagan," where you can eat super delicious steaks. Sunday afternoons are also good times for going to the movies and visiting grandparents. Sometime we drive to "the table of the saints."
Tell me us about your choir (highlighted below).
The Coral Comfenalco Santander is composed of people who love music and enjoy singing with friends. We perform many different genres but the music that we love most is the Colombian música as this is in our veins and what makes us dance with body and soul.
